Oil dispersion (OD)
Oil dispersion (OD) formulations typically contain active ingredient(s) between 4.0 - 20.0 wt.%. In this formulation, the active ingredient(s) is suspended in a water-insoluble organic solvent. When mixed with water the active ingredient particles are dispersed in water and the organic solvent is emulsified due to the added emulsifying agents.
To ensure a long-term stability, the active ingredient(s) has to be stably dispersed in the water-immiscible solvent, preventing recrystallization or cake formation. The incorporation of adjuvants may further enhance the biological efficacy of the formulation.
The formulation is intended for dilution with water before application (spray mixture).
Key-factors:
- Active ingredient(s) must be insoluble in water-insoluble solvent.
- Active ingredient(s) with high melting point.
- Crystal formation and sedimentation have to be suppressed.
